(sorry for the brevity and lack of deep insight here) "The Fortunes of Wangrin" purports to be a true story of a graft-greedy native interpreter in newly-colonized West Africa early in the 20th century. It's a highly readable account full of politics, culture-clash, greed, cynicism, intrigue, and native jostling for prestige.
